Rob Killenberger -Taking the Trak2 on the road

Rob KillenbergerRob Killenberger is a live sound designer who has mixed sound for artists such as Counting Crows, Joan Osborne, Live, Spin Doctors, Nile Rogers, Christina Aguilera and many others. In addition, he has been designing for large-scale corporate events with Intel, Microsoft and Disney just to name a few. " In my spare time," he says, "I've embarked on recording projects with new artists as well as recording some of the above artists in live settings and their personal studios."

Hailing originally from Peekskill, NY, Rob stumbled upon the audio business in seventh grade. "Believe it or not, it all began in middle school, at the ripe young age of 13," he says. "I joined the stage crew and helped with the lighting. Later that year, a teacher from the neighboring high school (my future alma mater) asked me to run the sound (a 6-channel Peavey powered mixer) for him. I accepted with much fear."

RJK Productions was established in 1986, and by the mid-nineties, Killenberger was touring with major acts like Counting Crows. Rob has also handled the sound design for many different types of live shows, specializing in corporate presentations of late, for clients such as Intel and Washington Mutual.

"I use the Apogee to record segments for the corporate presentations," he says. "I take the gear with me, because many things change at the last minute, and having this equipment on hand makes it possible to make studio-quality recordings in the field." Back in the studio, he uses the Trak2 in conjunction with MOTU's 896 and 828, with a G4 dual-processor 800MHz PowerMac, and on the road, a 667MHz Titanium PowerBook. He's had the Trak2 for about a year: "It sounds great," he notes. "I use it on vocals, and I especially like it with the Neumann M147 tube microphone," he comments. "I love the vocal quality and realism."

Another band Rob's been working with lately is New York-based GrooveLily, two members of which are shown here with the Trak2. On the left is Gene Lewin (drummer), and the violinist is Valerie Vigoda, who has also toured with Joe Jackson, Cyndi Lauper (vocals/electric violin) and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (concertmistress/violin.) The outfit is completed by Brendan Milburn (vocals/keys.)

"I used the Trak2 extensively during the recording of their album," says Rob. " We were all stunned at the realism and accuracy of the mic preamps in the unit. Valerie Vigoda's voice is usually a challenging one to get down due to her wide dynamic range, but the Trak 2 handled it brilliantly, thanks to the Soft Limit feature. And the converters were superb.

"All in all, a fantastic box which has made the artists very happy. When they can tell the difference, you know it's gotta be great! Thanks for building such a great product!" he concludes.
